Who You Marry!

Inspiration - The Story of Jehoram and Ahaziah (2 Chronicles 21&22)

The series for the month will be on marriage and family, it's going to be an amazing journey this July. Stay updated

During my Bible study sometime ago, I came across the story of Jehoram and Ahaziah. It was such a striking story and I learnt about the power and influence of marriage in a person's life.

I once heard a preacher say "when choosing a spouse, remember that you are choosing a parent for your children". In other words don't just consider your feelings for someone, consider if they will be of good example to your children as parents.

Jehoram, King of Judah married the daughter of King Ahab of Israel (an evil and brutal king). Jehoram was greatly influenced by his wife, he ultimately followed the ways of his wife's family.

The Bible admonishes us not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers because God knows the power of influence in every relationship. Jehoram didn't live very long because he lived contrary to God's principles.

His son King Ahaziah followed his ways because he was under the guidance of his mother. It is difficult and rare for a child to live contrary to the examples of his/her parents.

When considering to stay with someone, even if you clain your values are too strong to be influenced how about your children who are just developing their values.

I watched a movie that further emphasized on this lesson, a man married an evil woman that greatly influenced and motivated him to become evil as well. At some point he began to realize how much his wife has influenced his negative decisions.

Without a doubt, it is clear your spouse will greatly influence you. Marry a person whose influence is needed in your life.
